What are Riluzole tablets 50 mg for ALS treatment?
Riluzole, a groundbreaking medication approved for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), was first introduced to the medical world in 1996. Since its release, numerous clinical trials have consistently demonstrated its significant impact on the survival rate and overall management of this neurodegenerative disease.
The mechanism of action of riluzole is complex. Riluzole tablets act by blocking TTX-sensitive sodium channels, which are implicated in the pathological processes of ALS. By inhibiting these channels, riluzole helps regulate the excessive release of glutamate, a neurotransmitter that plays a pivotal role in the excitotoxicity observed in ALS. Additionally, riluzole also acts on kainate and NMDA receptors, further modulating glutamate activity in the central nervous system and reducing its excitotoxic effects.
ALS patients at various stages of the disease can benefit from riluzole treatment. The medication not only addresses central nervous system dysfunction but also tackles peripheral dysfunction, contributing to a partial normalization of neuronal activity. This normalization can significantly extend the period during which patients can maintain their independence from assisted ventilation systems.
Perhaps one of the most crucial aspects of riluzole's efficacy is its impact on prolonging survival. Clinical studies have shown that riluzole can extend the average survival time of ALS patients from 11.8 months to 14.8 months, translating to a notable 3-month increase in life expectancy. Moreover, riluzole administration has been associated with a noteworthy 9% increase in the overall survival rate among ALS patients.
