Pravastatin Na tablets 5 mg for hyperlipidemia and hypercholesterolemia (statin, Pravachol)
What are Pravastatin Na tablets 5 mg for hyperlipidemia and hypercholesterolemia (statin, Pravachol)?
Pravastatin is a statin-class medication. It works by inhibiting an enzyme involved in cholesterol production and suppressing the synthesis of very-low-density lipoproteins. This mechanism helps to lower overall cholesterol levels in the body, including LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, commonly referred to as "bad" cholesterol. Unlike most statins that are primarily metabolized by the liver, Pravastatin is eliminated by the kidneys. This characteristic makes it a suitable option for patients with liver dysfunction who may have limitations in liver metabolism. However, it is important to consult with a doctor and undergo monitoring to ensure its safe use in such cases.
Pravastatin tablets are commonly prescribed for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, a condition characterized by elevated levels of lipids (including cholesterol and triglycerides) in the bloodstream. They are also effective in managing familial high cholesterol, a hereditary condition causing high cholesterol levels. Pravastatin helps to decrease LDL cholesterol levels, which is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Simultaneously, it has been observed to increase levels of HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, often referred to as "good" cholesterol. This dual effect on cholesterol levels contributes to an improved lipid profile. Pravastatin has been found to lower blood triglyceride levels, another type of lipid that, when elevated, can contribute to cardiovascular risk. By reducing triglyceride levels, Pravastatin helps in maintaining a healthier lipid balance in the bloodstream. A long-term study involving over 7,000 patients conducted over 16 years demonstrated that Pravastatin significantly lowers the risk of mortality due to cardiovascular events.
