What are Pentasa tablets 500 mg for ulcerative colitis and Crohn's Disease?

An active principle of Pentasa tablets is mesalazine, 5-aminosalicylic acid. It works by blocking the synthesis leukotrienes and prostaglandins and reducing inflammation of the intestinal mucosa. Pentasa tablets are effective for the treatment of ulcerative colitis and mild, moderate, and severe forms of Crohn's Disease. This medicine provides anti-inflammatory effect, helps to heal the damaged sections of the intestinal tract, reduces pain and relieves intestinal bleeding. Also, Pentasa tablets prevent bacterial growth within the intestines.

Pentasa tablets can be used as monotherapy for adults and children older than 46 months. Also, mesalazine increases the effectiveness of other medications such as azathioprine.

How to take

For ulcerative colitis (adults): adults should take 1 tablet 3 times a day, after meals. Your doctor may adjust the dosage according to your age and symptoms, but the maximum dosage of 2,250 mg a day should not be exceeded. In the remission stage, you may be instructed to take the medicine once a day. In the active stage, however, you may be instructed to take the medicine 4,000 mg daily in 2 divided dose tablets 2 times a day.

For ulcerative colitis (children): children should take 30-60 mg of the active principle  per kilogram of body weight a day, dividing this amount into 3 times, after meals. Your doctor may adjust the dosage according to the child's age and symptoms, but the maximum dosage of 2,250 mg a day should not be exceeded. 

For Crohn's disease (adults): adults should take 1-2 tablets 3 times a day, after meals. Your doctor may adjust the dosage according to your age and symptoms.

For Crohn's disease (children):  children should take 40-60 mg of the active principle  per kilogram of body weight a day, dividing this amount into 3 times, after meals. Your doctor may adjust the dosage according to the child's age and symptoms.

Please note that this medicine contains 500 mg of the principle in one tablet.

You may split the medicine in half to take. However, since the medicine regulates the release of the active principle, take it without chewing.

Contraindications: do not use for the following patients:

• pregnant or breastfeeding women,
• patients with renal or liver diseases,
• patients with hypersensitivity to salicylates,
• patients with gastric or duodenal ulcers.

If an allergic reaction occurs, patient needs to stop using the medicine and consult with their doctor. If patient is taking any other medication or treatment, they should consult with their doctor in advance.
