Medicon tablets 15 mg for cough (dextromethorphan, tuberculosis, bronchitis)
What are Medicon tablets 15 mg for cough (dextromethorphan, tuberculosis, bronchitis)?
Medicon tablets containing dextromethorphan are commonly used in the management of cough. Dextromethorphan, a synthetic derivative of morphine, exerts its therapeutic effect primarily by suppressing the cough reflex within the central nervous system. This mechanism of action distinguishes it from other cough medications, such as codeine, which work through direct effects on the respiratory center.
Upon ingestion, dextromethorphan is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and subsequently undergoes first-pass metabolism in the liver to form its active metabolite, dextrorphan. This metabolite acts on the brainstem, specifically the medullary cough center, by binding to and antagonizing N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors and sigma-1 receptors. Through these interactions, it reduces the sensitivity of the cough reflex, thus diminishing the urge to cough.
Medicon tablets are particularly effective against non-productive coughs, where the patient is not producing significant amounts of mucus. This medicine helps to relieve cough of various genesis, including cough caused by cold, acute bronchitis, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, pneumonia, pulmonary tuberculosis and upper respiratory tract inflammation (laryngopharyngitis, nasal catarrh), and cough caused by imaging measurement of bronchi and bronchoscopic examination.
