What are Losartan potassium tablets 100 mg for hypertension and diabetic nephropathy (Cozaar)?
Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. It works by affecting AT1 subtype of the AT1 receptor. By this, it relaxes the blood vessels and decreases the blood pressure. Losartan potassium tablets also reduce proteinuria, which can cause the kidneys to deteriorate.
Losartan potassium tablets are effective for lowering the blood pressure in hypertension patients and patients with left ventricular hypertrophy or enlarged heart. This medicine is also be used to treat diabetic nephropathy in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus. A study comparing 15 years of losartan usage revealed that it is safe, effective, and has unique characteristics that are not found in other angiotensin II blockers.

Indications: hypertension and diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus
How to take
For hypertension: adults should take 25-50 mg of the active principle at a time, once a day. Your doctor may adjust the dosage according to the age or symptoms, or may increase it up to 100 mg a day.
For diabetic nephropathy in the type 2 diabetes mellitus accompanied by hypertension and proteinuria: adults should take 50 mg of the active principle at a time, once a day. The dosage may be increased up to 100 mg a day according to the blood pressure level. For patients who have the potential to develop excessive hypotension, the initial dose is 25 mg at a time.
Please note that this preparation contains 100 mg of the active principle in one tablet.
Contraindications: do not use for the following patients:
- Pregnant or possibly pregnant women,
- Breastfeeding women,
- Patients with a history of hepatic and renal disease.
- Patients with cerebrovascular disorders (cerebral stroke, etc.) or a history of cerebrovascular disorder.
Important information
As these tablets may cause dizziness, patient should be careful when driving a car, working at heights or operating dangerous machinery.
