Latanoprost ophthalmic solution 0.005% for glaucoma and ocular hypertension (Xalatan)
What is Latanoprost (Xalatan) ophthalmic solution 0.005% for glaucoma and ocular hypertension?
Latanoprost is a ester prodrug activating the free acid in eye cornea. It works as an analog to prostaglandin and a selective antagonist at the prostaglandin receptor. By increasing the sclera's permeability for aqueous liquid, Latanoprost eye drops increase the outflow of fluid and subsequently decrease the intraocular pressure. This medicine is well absorbed through the cornea, safe and well-tolerated. Its action lasts at least 24 hours, allowing to use the ophthalmic solution only once a day.
Latanoprost is effective in treating ocular hypertension and glaucoma. Studies showed that it is more clinicallyh effective than brimonidine, dorzolamide, or timolol.
