Hepsera tablets 10 mg for chronic hepatitis B (adefovir, Preveon)
What are Hepsera tablets 10 mg for chronic hepatitis B (adefovir, Preveon)?
The active principle of Hepsera tablets is adefovir pivoxil, a prodrug of adefovir, a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. It works by blocking reverse transcriptase, an enzyme essential for hepatitis B virus to reproduce in the body. By this, Hepsera tablets suppress the virus growth and improve the liver function.
Hepsera tablets are effective for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus infection. This medicine helps to reach the following effects:
- histologic improvement,
- reduction in serum HBV DNA levels,
- normalization of alanine aminotransferase levels,
- normalization of HBeAg seroconversion.
Clinical studies proved that the dosage of 10 mg of adefovir a day is relatively safe, has few adverse effects and the virus is unlikely to develop resistance to it within the first 48 weeks of treatment at least.
