What are Colchicine tablets 0.5 mg for gout attacks and familial Mediterranean fever (Colcrys, Mitigare)?
Colchicine is a well-known anti-inflammatory agent, originally delivered form a plant. In patients with gout, colchicine accumulates in white blood cells and decreases inflammation in multiple ways:
- Inhibits activation and migration of neutrophils to sites of inflammation,
- Interferes with the inflammasome complex of neutrophils,
- Inhibits release of glycoproteins that promote chemotaxis from neutrophils,
- Inhibits neutrophil motility and activity.
For patients with familial Mediterranean fever Colchicine tablets act on microtubules, suppress inflammatory cytokine production, reduce attacks and the long-term risk of amyloidosis.

Indications: preventing gout attacks, improving symptoms of familial Mediterranean fever
How to take
During attack: adults should take 1 tablet (0.5 mg of the active ingredient) at a time every 3-4 hours, 6-8 times a day. Your doctor may adjust the dosage according to your age or symptoms. If the daily dosage of 6-8 tablets is not tolerated well, daily dose should be limited to 1.8 mg a day.
Attack prevention: adults should take 1-2 tablets (0.5-1 mg) a day.
Feeling (a hunch) of attack: adults should take 1 tablet (0.5 mg) at a time.
Familial Mediterranean fever: adults should take 1 tablet (0.5 mg) at a time in 1 to 2 divided doses.Your doctor may adjust the dosage according to your age or condition. The maximum daily dose is 1.5 mg. Children should take 0.01 to 0.02 mg/kg of the active ingredient a day in 1 to 2 divided doses. Your pediatrician may adjust the dosage according to your age or condition. The maximum daily dose is 0.03 mg/kg.
Contraindications: do not use for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Do not use for patients with liver or renal disorder.
Important information
Do not take grapefruit juice while taking these tablets.
If an allergic reaction occurs, patient needs to stop using the medicine and consult with their doctor. If patient is taking any other medication or treatment, they should consult with their doctor in advance.
