Cholebine tablets 500 mg for hypercholesterolemia and familial hypercholesterolemia (colestimide, colestilan, BindRen)
What are Cholebine tablets 500 mg for hypercholesterolemia and familial hypercholesterolemia (colestimide, colestilan, BindRen)?
Cholebine tablets, which contain the active ingredient colestimide, are commonly prescribed for the management of hypercholesterolemia and familial hypercholesterolemia. This medication functions by leveraging its bile acid-binding properties to reduce serum cholesterol levels effectively.
The mechanism of action of Cholebine tablets primarily revolves around their ability to adsorb bile acids and cholesterol in the digestive tract. Colestimide acts as a bile acid sequestrant, working by binding to bile acids in the intestinal lumen. By forming non-absorbable complexes with bile acids, Cholebine inhibits their reabsorption and promotes their elimination via feces. This prompts the liver to enhance the utilization of cholesterol to synthesize new bile acids, thereby reducing the overall cholesterol content in the bloodstream.
Cholebine's effectiveness in lowering cholesterol levels is well-documented. By intercepting bile acids, it disrupts the enterohepatic circulation of these acids, forcing the liver to draw upon cholesterol reserves to synthesize more bile acids. Consequently, this depletes the cholesterol pool within the liver and results in the upregulation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors on hepatocytes. This increased expression of LDL receptors on liver cells further contributes to the removal of LDL cholesterol from the blood.
In the context of familial hypercholesterolemia, a genetic disorder characterized by high levels of LDL cholesterol, Cholebine tablets offer a non-systemic approach to re, making it a valuable adjunct to other lipid-lowering therapies. Cholebine tablets may also be used in combination with other medications.
