What are Azanin (azathioprine, Imuran) tablets 50 mg for Crohn's disease?

Azanin tablets contain azathioprine, an immunosuppressant which slows down the development and growth of immunocompetent cells. In this way it reduces the inflammatory process and supports the action of steroids in Crohn's disease. Azanin tablets are effective for achieving stable remission in patients with Crohn's disease. The medicine can be used in combination with steroids and salicylates to increase their effec or after the steroid the course is completed to consolidate the effect.

How to take

Adults should take 1-2 tablets (50-100 mg of active principle) per day. Children should take 1-2 mg of the active ingredient per 1 kg of weight per day.

Contraindications: do not use for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Use with caution for patients with renal and hepatic insufficiency, under the supervision of the attending physician. 

Important information

• If used together with allopurinol, oxypurinol or thiopurine, the dosage should be reduced by 4 times.
• The drug is especially recommended for patients with intolerance to mesalazine or sulfasalazine and for patients who require a second course of steroids.
• It is also possible to use azathioprine in conjunction with salicylates, but the dosage should be adjusted by the doctor in charge.
• If an allergic reaction occurs, patients needs to stop using the medicine and consult with their doctor. If patient is taking any other medication or treatment, they should consult with their doctor in advance.
